NSETC to hold medical careers advice seminar

Bristol University will be giving advice on university applications in a medicine seminar hosted by the North Somerset Enterprise and Technology College (NSETC) on Wednesday November 18.

The event will take place between 3.30pm and 5.30pm and is accessible to anyone who is interested in finding out about a medical career – not just current students at NSETC.

Bristol University representatives will be giving advice on applying to study medicine, Oxford Brookes University will provide an overview on allied health professions such as nursing and midwifery and the University of the West of England (UWE) will offer in-depth information about their health science degrees such as biomedical science.

Careers stands will hosted by experts in the industry including medical students, an osteopath, an optician, paramedic and an ITU nurse.  Doctors from Weston Hospital will also provide information about the opportunities available at the hospital and how to obtain work experience with them.

Karen Cornick, Principal at NSETC, said: “Our close links to organisations enable us to give ‘real-life’ experiences within the classroom.

“This event is about showing the different career paths available within the medical industry, advising students on their university applications, the various work experience opportunities available and what they need to achieve in order progress their chosen career path.

“We hope the career seminar can inspire the medicine workforce of the future and prepare our students to gain the skills and knowledge they will need to be successful.”

This is the first career seminar to be held at NSETC, which is a specialist free school for students aged 14-19. It has been described as ‘a new model of learning’, and has a focus on Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM), combined with a strong business ethos in which enterprise is incorporated into the curriculum.

NSETC opened to students in September 2014, and is presently located at the South West Skills Campus at Weston College but will transfer to its own purpose-built campus near to Weston-super-Mare’s Junction 21 Enterprise Area in September 2016.

The medical careers seminar will take place at North Somerset Enterprise and Technology College, Locking Road, Weston Super Mare, BS22 8NL. For further information or to register your attendance to the event, contact Emma Cox on 01934 411477 or
