NSETC student wins Weston College award

North Somerset Enterprise and Technology College (NSETC) student Melissa Sturman has won the Inspirational Futures Trust Student of the Year Award at a Weston College awards ceremony.

The ‘Celebration of Success’ event, held at the Winter Gardens, Weston-super-Mare and sponsored by Castelan Group, was a chance for over 300 attendees to hear remarkable personal stories from across all sectors of the Weston College Group.

Parents, friends and business guests were treated to a three-course meal cooked under the direction of Andrew Walker, executive chef at Chartwells – the leading provider of catering and support services to the UK education sector.

“NSETC has given me exciting opportunities to develop skills outside the classroom,” said Melissa after collecting her award from guest speaker Nicki Chapman. “The opportunities I have been provided with cannot be put into words.”

“Being a student at NSETC has given me the opportunity to take part in a wide range of extra-curricular activities, like Young Enterprise, where we started our own company in the ‘real world’.”

Melissa recently led the school’s Young Enterprise team to success at the Young Enterprise West of England Trade Fair, where her company ‘Re-kindled Light’ won the Best Trade Stand award. Overall, Melissa’s team won five awards in the competition and they came 3rd in the West of England Area Finals.

Ruth Davies, Head of Year 12 and Teacher of Business and Economics at NSETC, said: “The Celebration of Success was a wonderful opportunity to share, acknowledge and reward students for their amazing work. Melissa thoroughly deserved this award and both Melissa and her family should be immensely proud. It was an honour to be able to share the night with them.”

Karen Cornick, Principal of the NSETC, said: “We want all of our students to challenge themselves to develop wider skills and face new situations.  Melissa exemplifies this can-do approach.

“She has excelled in leading the Young Enterprise group to success whilst also making outstanding progress in her studies.  We are very proud of Melissa: she is a role model for other students aspiring to the highest levels of achievement in the NSETC sixth form.”

“We are absolutely thrilled by the success achieved by Melissa,” said Jacqui Ford, Chief Executive of the Inspirational Futures Trust. “Her outstanding efforts combined with outstanding teaching and learning is testament to the ‘learner first’ ethos shared by the Weston College Group. As the NSETC continues to grow we look forward to celebrating many more successes.”

The NSETC is a specialist 14-19 school with a sixth form described as ‘a new model of learning’, and has a focus on science, technology, engineering and maths, combined with a strong business ethos in which enterprise is incorporated into the curriculum.
